The visit to the Museum of Pella, is the continuation of a tour that starts from the archaeological site. It offers an overall view of the ancient city, which was the capital of the Macedonian kingdom after its transfer from Aigai, at the end of the 5th c. B.C., expanded in the second half of the 4th c. BC, acquiring the characteristics of a big city. The exhibition of the Museum reveals various aspects of its public and private life through its thematic units.

Its architectural configuration at different levels enables the visitor to have visual contact with almost all units, but also with the archaeological site, through the window-openings of the building.

One of the most important works, a marble bust of Alexander III, welcomes him. It is one of the most remarkable portraits of the Macedonian king, probably created by the great sculptor Lysippos, at the end of the 4th century BC. Next to it, there is another important work of sculpture, the marble statuette depicting Alexander with the characteristic horns of the forest god, Pan.

The section devoted to the private life of the inhabitants of the ancient capital, contains the famous mosaic floors, prototypes and copies, coming from the banquet areas of the luxurious houses of the so-called “House of Dionysus” and “House of Helen and depict mythological scenes and snapshots from the activities of the Macedonian aristocracy, such as the deer and lion hunt.

The visitor can also see artifacts from the Agora of Pella, the largest in the ancient Greek world, which is the center of the public life of the multifaceted capital, from the important sanctuaries of the city, such as the Sanctuary of the Mother of Gods and Aphrodite, the Thesmophorion and the Sanctuary of Darron and from the cemeteries and the burial rites of ancient Pella.

A separate unit presents the palace, a complex of many buildings, which included the king’s habitation unit and also served administrative, political, diplomatic and religious needs of the Macedonian state.
The 1st floor houses temporary exhibitions.
