Tips For Train Travel Around Europe
So You’ve Decided On Train Travel…
There are many reasons why you may want to take on Europe by train. There are the logical reasons – the forgiving cost, the ability to go just about anywhere, and the fantastic view – but there’s only motivation that you REALLY need to make this decision: you want that unique, stuff-of-dreams experience!
If this is a choice you’ve made, I am happy to say that the road ahead will likely be a smooth one. The European train system has a reputation for being on time (more so than air travel) and comfortable (thanks to roomy seats). That being said, it does have some “quirks” that you’ll need to anticipate if you want a smooth trip, from start to finish. In this post, I’ll demystify some of the most important ones here so that nothing catches you off-guard when you begin making your itinerary.
Choose Between Point-to-Point & Rail Passes
When you shop for passes, the two main types that will be available to you are city-to-city passes and rail passes. The first will only cover a trip from one point to another, while the latter will cover travel within one or more countries for a predetermined number of days. Only got three destinations on your itinerary? Point-to-point tickets will do the trick. Planning on going EVERYWHERE? A rail pass (specifically the Eurail Global Pass) is what you’re looking for.
If your situation lies somewhere in between, though, then you’ll need to calculate the costs of taking trains point-to-point and compare them with the costs of using a pass. I promise that the research will be worth it, as the costs can diverge greatly depending on the duration of your stops and how many you take.
Be A Savvy Overnight Traveller
European overnight trains offer two kinds of specialized night-time accommodations: sleepers and couchettes. Sleepers are more private (and pricey) and have one to three beds, while couchettes provide four or six beds in general and will feel slightly more cramped. You’ll get to indicate whether you’re traveling alone or with people you’d like to share your compartment with, and you will be assigned accordingly.
To take a night train, make sure to reserve your bed at least a few days in advance. They can sell out quickly, especially on popular routes. If instead, you’re travelling on a shoestring (and I’m all for that), you can also select overnight trains with regular seats instead of beds. If that’s the route you’re taking, make sure you’re well equipped for travel comfort with a good neck pillow.
Try A Popular Train Route
Europe is unique in that it is host to many beautiful landscapes, all connected by train. Many train routes are so steeped in history or other significance that they’re practically museums in and of themselves. Some popular routes known for beauty or other significance include:
- The Chocolate Train in Switzerland
- The Bernina Express from Switzerland to Italy
- The Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia
- The Balkan Odyssey from Venice to Budapest
In Europe’s far-reaching trains, you can take in anything from the ocean to the Alps. The mountains will only add to the charm of your train journey thanks to all the magical tunnels they’re home to.
Practice Proper Train Etiquette
European is home to many cultures, and, hence, many different brands of train etiquette. In general, passengers are very polite, will keep their voices low, and will avoid using the phone in the train compartments. The noise level may be lower than what you’re used to in your home country, so adjust yours accordingly.
Though I have no doubt about the general politesse of European travellers, I must also include a warning here: pickpockets are uncommon but not rare at train stations and on trains. Pay attention to your belongings at every junction of the trip and make sure your travel documents are always close at hand.
All Aboard!
The magic of train travel is unparalleled, and few train systems can compete with Europe’s in terms of beauty and history. Trains may not be the focus of your trip to the continent, but they can certainly help to round out your perfect experience. It’s time to quench that wanderlust. Make your itinerary, pack your bags, and let the rumble of the train move YOU!
