Amerongen Castle, as it now stands, was commissioned by Godard Adriaan van Reede and his wife Margaretha Turnor and was built between 1673 and 1685, after the medieval castle was destroyed by French troops in 1673. It belonged to the ‘van Reede’ family from 1557 until 1879. In 1879 the last female descendant left everything to her nephew, who was also her godson, Godard John George Carel graaf van Aldenburg Bentinck, who was to live in the house until 1940. In 1977 the Bentinck family sold the castle, with complete inventory, and the park to the Castles of Utrecht Foundation (Stichting Utrechtse Kastelen) and the house and garden were opened to the public. Amerongen Castle Foundation (Stichting Kasteel Amerongen) became the owner in 1982. The lavish interior has remained as it was when the last owners left and reflects the taste, the wealth and the history of the various families who lived there between the 17th and 20th century.
