The archaeological museum of Florence, founded in 1870, is one of the most ancient museums in Florence. His origins lie in the archeological collections of the Medici and Lorraine dynasties.

The museum has a large exposition of Etruscan artifacts among which the two great bronze statues “Chimaera” and “the Orator”; Greek artifacts, especially pottery , with the magnificent François Vase, a masterpiece of the Athenians Ergotimos and Kleitias; Roman objects including the “Little Idol” a bronze statue from Pesaro.

The Museum also displays a huge Egyptian collection, one of the most important in the world, consisting of more than 14.000 artifacts covering all the Egyptian history from the Ancient Kingdom to the Coptic period, including mummies , daily-life objects and a wooden chariot dated from the 18th dynasty.
A Coin Cabinet and a monumental Garden, where many original Etruscan tombs are displayed, accessible in specific hours, along with temporary exhibitions complement the permanent exposition of the Museum.
