Baptistry
The Baptistry can be found in front of the west façade of the Cathedral, which is a different location than the original Baptismal building. The construction of this Baptistry began during the middle of the 12th century to replace the original building and was devoted to St. John the Baptist.
This is the largest Baptistry within Italy and there are twelve columns, baptismal font with eight sides, and there is the same font on the three steps that represent the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This entire building has not been overly decorated over the years, which makes it seem quite plain looking. The vault is the most unique and intriguing feature as it contains red tiles on the one side that faces towards the sea and the side that faces where the sun rises each day has been lined with lead plates.
Sinopie Museum
The Sinopie Museum, or Museo delle Sinopie in Italian, can be found to the south of the Cathedral as well as many of the other monuments. The building that the museum is in used to be the New Hospital of Holy Spirit back in the mid-1200s, and many of the poor and sick stayed there along with abandoned children.
Inside the Sinopie Museum, visitors will find excellently preserved preparatory drawings and the exhibit was designed by numerous architects. The metal structures are arranged on multiple levels, but there are also sections that contain 3D graphics systems, multimedia, and technology to enhance the images.
Graveyard
The graveyard in Pisa is known as the Monumental Cemetery and it was founded in 1277 by Giovanni di Simone. The long marble wall has forty-three arches and two doors, and it is the oldest medieval Christian architectural area in the world.
Sepulchers of both the Medici family and prestigious teachers from the University of Pisa can be found at the graveyard. On the inside walls of the graveyard, there were frescoes painted by phenomenal artists. Within the Northern Gallery, the frescoes were the stories of the Old Testament, while the Southern Gallery had the stories of Genesis.
Not many of the frescoes can be seen today, due to the fire that was caused by a bomb splinter in 1944. The frescoes that survived, as well as the carefully preserved drawings that were found can be seen within the Sinopie Museum.
Cathedral
The Cathedral is the main church within Pisa and it is where the archbishop has an office as well. The Cathedral was originally called Santa Maria Maggiore, even though it has been devoted to Santa Maria Assunta.
Construction on this cathedral began back between 1063 and 1064 and there are numerous architectural style elements represented. The building has undergone expansion as well as restoration and renovations after a fire in 1595. That fire caused the need for the roof to be rebuilt and all but one of the original gates were destroyed. The only gate that is original is the San Ranieri one that is in front of the bell tower.
The inside of the Cathedral has black and white marble along with a gilded and coffered ceiling that has numerous frescoes. The Pulpito was one of the first works of Giovanni Pisano during the early 1300s. It was taken down when restoration work was being completed in 1600 and was never put back in place until 1926.
There are some noticeable differences in the building that can be seen, and the cause was from landslides, shifting soil, and the actual building actually collapsing over time.
