Madurodam amusement park
Madurodam is the name of an extraordinary amusement park in the Netherlands, between The Hague, in the Dutch Den Haag, and the neighboring maritime suburb of Scheveningen. Within the area approximately three hundred famous buildings from the Netherlands were reproduced, miniaturized in a scale of 1:25. Inside the so-called “Holland in Miniature” stand ancient windmills, monuments, castles, bridges and palaces of particular historical-artistic importance, all within walking distance of each other.
Madurodam is a miniature reproduction in 1:25 scale of the major cities of the Netherlands. It covers an area of about 18,000 square meters and it is astonishing how they have been able to recreate the major monuments of the Dutch cities with such precision and attention to detail. Madurodam was designed by J.M.K. Maduro (hence the name) in 1952 as a tribute to his son George, who died in a concentration camp in Dachau. In the site you can find miniature reproductions of many famous buildings and structures such as Dam Square in Amsterdam, Shiphol Airport, Rotterdam Europort, Rijksmuseum, Bibliotheek Rotterdam, Anne Frank House, Hoge Raad, Palace of Peace, Binnenhof, a faithful reproduction of the ship Amsterdam, and also a reproduction of the house of George Maduro and many other streets, squares, buildings, monuments of the Netherlands.
Madurodam is not just a theme park, it is also a monument to a war hero. Shortly after George Maduro died in 1945 in the Dachau concentration camp, his parents financed the construction of the miniature city in his honor. Since its opening, the proceeds of the park are donated to charity. Queen Beatrix was the first mayor of Madurodam, followed by many others who, proud of their position, inaugurated new models and various exhibitions. Not to be missed! The visit to Maduroram is more than recommendable and will be interesting for both children and adults. With the ticket price they will give you a complete guide in your language, with the recommended route, so as not to miss the extraordinary models that are in the park. Although at first glance the park looks small, take at least two hours to visit. You can combine the visit to Madurodam with a walk to The Hague, the administrative capital of the country.
To make the atmosphere even more extraordinary are the many events organized by the park management which, especially during the summer season, enliven the squares and streets immersed in the mini-buildings day and night. The park, which generally opens its doors at the beginning of April to close the first days of September, is therefore open only between spring and summer, which are obviously the best seasons to visit Madurodam and the nearby town of L ‘Hague. The temperatures are indeed pleasant and the only risk is represented by the possible occurrence of short, but intense, afternoon thunderstorms.
