Brazilian Side of Iguassu Falls and Itaipu Dam Full-Day Sightseeing Tour from Puerto Iguazí_
Combine two great sightseeing excursions on this cross-border day trip from Puerto Iguazu to the Brazilian side of Iguassu Falls and the Itaipu Dam. First, enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of Iguacu National Park and get up close and personal with the majestic DevilŒÍ s Throat. Then, head over to Itaipu Dam and explore the largest operational hydroelectric power plant in the world.
Iguassu Falls was created as the result of a volcanic eruption that left a large crack in the earth. Iguassu is taller than Niagara Falls (and twice as wide) and consists of 275 cascading falls spread out over nearly 2 miles (3.2 km) in a horseshoe shape. During the rainy season, between November and March, the rate of water that flows over the falls can reach more than 450,000 cubic feet (12,750 cubic meters) per second.
Leaving Puerto Iguazí_ behind, you’ll cross the border into Brazil and visit DevilŒÇs Throat, the largest waterfall in the region and one best seen from the Brazilian side of Iguassu Falls. Here, you’ll watch as 14 falls drop 350 feet (107 meters) with such force that a 100-foot (30-meter) tall cloud of mist stays permanently suspended overhead. This area is famous for its rainbow, and great photo opportunities abound!
For a close-up of the falls, walk through the subtropical forest of Iguacu National Park to the base of Salto Floriano. From there, take the elevator to the top of the falls, or walk out over the falls at Salto Union.
Your next stop is the Itaipu Dam, the largest operational hydroelectric power plant in the world. Built on the Paraníç River near the border between Brazil and Paraguay, this plant generates a power of 12,600 megawatts, approximately 25% of the electricity consumed by Brazil and 95% of the energy consumed by Paraguay.
In 2009, transmission from the plant seized up, causing a power failure. The entire country of Paraguay and large regions of Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro and Sí£o Paulo, suffered a blackout. The power outage lasted approximately two hours and affected more than 50 million people, leading to one of the world’s largest blackouts.
Your guided sightseeing tour gives you an up-close view of the Itaipu Dam and offers you the chance to take some great photos! Your knowledgeable guide will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
